School D51 Offers Academic Options

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- School District 51 is continuing their efforts to keep kids engaged by customizing each students educational journey.

About 25 programs and nontraditional schools attended a meeting Wednesday night to show parents and students how to get involved.

"It's the 21 century, so you can custom-make your educational experience. You can take some classes online, and you can take some classes at your neighborhood school," said Rob Roybal, director of academic options.

The academic options give students the opportunity to select classes that fit them best, at the location they feel most comfortable at while mix matching classes at their local high school as well.

"We decided that I didn't want to do the traditional kind of high school, and so we saw this and we got really interested in the online environment," said Karman Devereux, crossover student.

Devereux says after customizing her education, she's able to take classes that best suit her, at her own pace.

"I like the flexibility that my schedule offers, a lot," said Devereux.

Roybal says these academic options have been offered for two years, and are available to students kindergarten through 12th grade.

"It's an exciting time to be a kid in School District 51, lots of different ways to learn. Our job is to make sure there's lots of cool academic options for kids," said Roybal.
