School D51 Discusses Calendar Change

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- School District 51 officials say the four-day school week that was discussed last year, is once again being brought up.

Thursday night school officials held a meeting to discuss four different calendar options for next school year.

Each option promotes its own benefits.

One potential change would be switching over to four-day school weeks. Other options include offering more breaks within the year to equal a shorter summer for students, so there isn't a large gap of time off. Another option would be to start the school year a week earlier in August.

"I'm more prone to look at the traditional schedule. My second choice would be the proposed five-day extended, and then a last ditch to go to a four-day," said Sean Morris, parent of two.

School officials say the calendar changes have nothing to do with money, but is more about the success of individual students.

They will gather all the feedback given Thursday night and discuss it Jan. 22, and come out with a new calendar schedule sometime in February.
