School Administrators To Carry Firearms

DOLORES COUNTY, Colo.- One Colorado School Board votes unanimously to arm administrators.

According to The Cortez Journal, the seven-member board that oversees schools in Dolores County voted unanimously Wednesday to allow the Principal at Dove Creek High School, and the Superintendent, to double as security officers, if they complete a concealed carry course and receive a permit from the county's sheriff's office.

Senator Steve King, who also wants to see more safety in schools, recently introduced a bill that would extend school resource officers throughout classrooms in Colorado.

King says any kind of control, whether it be more school resource officers, or arming school employees, is a move in the right direction.

"That is a great example of local control. I think the ability for that school board to look at the issue, look at where the school is in relationship to law enforcement, and look at their budget, is an excellent option," said King.

King's bill has unanimously passed out of judiciary and is on its way to the education committee in the senate where he expects it to pass.

As for Dove Creek High School, the principal and superintendent will receive an additional $1 salary for the extra duties.
