Scenic Elementary Holds Ceremony to Remember 9/11

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Tuesday marks the 11th anniversary of the September 11th terror attacks, and President Obama has ordered that flags be lowered to half-staff nationwide. Locally, an elementary school paid tribute to this memorable day by hosting a special ceremony.

The rainy weather didn't slow down folks at Scenic Elementary from commemorating the day, as they brought their patriotism indoors. Students and local residents poured into the school's gymnasium to hear the Fruita Choir sing the Star Spangled Banner and present local law enforcement with special gifts.

Students at the school also learned about the importance of this historic day.

“For them to remember what this country has been through and to understand what it means in this country to fight for the United States and protect this country,” said Justin Dillon of the Grand Junction Fire Department.

“I think it’s important for boys and girls to understand the importance of why we do things,” said Doug Levinson, principal of Scenic Elementary. “They need to know why we honor our country’s flag each and every day when we do the pledge."

Scenic Elementary has been hosting this special ceremony since September 11th’s first anniversary.

Every year we experience an inspiring reminder of why we love our country at this event. It is an opportunity to present to children the fundamental core of the honor and responsibility associated with being a citizen. The event is respectful and somber and yet still a celebration. Mr. Levinson is able to present a diffucult time in our history to children and still leave the adults insprired to appreciate all that this Day stands for. Thanks Scenic!

This is cool. Especially since the kids in that school weren't born when 9/11 occurred.
