Scams Attack Mesa County Residents

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. That's what the Mesa County Sheriff's Office is saying about several scams happening in Mesa County.

Lottery scams and overpayment scams have recently surfaced within the Grand Valley.

Officials say people who haven't even entered the lottery, are receiving calls saying they've won the 'Mega Millions,' or a car.

Along with the scams, officials warn to be cautious of fake checks, especially coming from online customers using websites like Craigslist.

"These people are bullying you into cashing the check by saying, 'You have my check now and if you don't cash it right away and forward this money on, I'm going to call law enforcement and say that you stole the check.' Well, the bullying is to get you to cash a fake check and get
legitimate money out of your account and pass it on before you realize it's a fake check," said Heather Benjamin, spokesperson for the Mesa County Sheriff's Office.

Officials say never wire money anywhere, and don't accept overpaid checks.

Sheriff officials say 'scammers' usually live out of the country, which is out of jurisdiction, and typically won't get caught.

For any questions regarding scams contact local law enforcement.
