KREX News Room
LAKEWOOD, Colo.- The Colorado Bureau of Investigation Identity Theft and Fraud Unit is warning the public of a scam targeting Colorado phone users.
The robo-call claims to be with the victim's cell phone carrier, or a financial institution, and indicates the account has been compromised.
The caller prompts potential victims to verify credit card information, allowing the scammers to get the credit card number, expiration date, and security code.
Officials say what is different about this scam compared to previous ones is that an actual phone number from Palo Alto, California shows up on the the caller ID. The origin of the phone number used for the robo call is an actual phone number that was hijacked as part of the scam and links back to a business in Palo Alto, California.
Authorities urge Coloradans to hang up if they believe they receive a call as part of the scam.
