Colo. Prison Incident Prompts Questions Over Correctional Facility Safety

MESA COUNTY, Colo.- A female prison worker was killed Monday in Crowley County, and it's drawing attention to the subject of safety within Colorado's correctional facilities.

Even though the facility in Mesa County is a jail and not a prison, sheriff's officials say it's run the same way.

Correctional officers are trained to be very cautious of their surroundings because outbursts can still happen among inmates.

“We have disturbances and assaults in the jail, even some inmate on officers,” said Mesa County Sheriff Stan Hilkey. “But you don't typically see them in the jail setting as often as you do in the prison setting.”

The Mesa County Jail holds on average 330 inmates each day.

Sheriff's officials say there's a science that goes into working around incarcerated people, and for the most part, it's done successfully.
