GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Three percent of the world's population has an intellectual disability, making it the largest disability population in the world. In order to spread awareness, the month of March has been declared National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.

However, SPEC-TRA, a local employment agency, supports individuals with disabilities all year round. As a whole, the organization employees about 200 people, but at Labor Solutions, which is a sub division of SPEC-TRA, nearly 30 people with disabilities work hard at the production shop.

"They’re a great group of people," said Melinda Harper, a direct support professional at Labor Solutions. “They work harder than you and me.”

The employees at the shop perform bulk mailing, product packaging, collating, shredding and sub-assembly work.

"It's all just about working with people and helping each other out,” said Coby Brown, a direct support professional. “They help me out and I help them and it’s just a big circle."

The organization has been providing support services to Mesa County residents with developmental disabilities for more than 40 years, and at Labor Solutions, the ages of the employees range from 22 to 34.
