SD51 to Hold Important Informational Meetings

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- School District 51 will be presenting different calendar options Thursday night, for the upcoming school year.

School officials say the four-day school week that we all learned about last year was never really thrown off the table, and that they always knew they would consider it for the future.

When it was determined in 2012 that it wasn't the right option for the current school year, some residents were pleased, and others not so much.

School officials want to stress that this calendar option has nothing to do with money, but ultimately, with the success of our students.

“It's not really based on a budget decision right now,” said Christy McGee, School District 51 spokesperson. “It’s just about achieving those goals of possibly more contact time and what's best for students. Really about what can we do within the resources we have.”

They plan on hosting open houses across the Grand Valley where they could seek some input on their decisions.

School officials tell NewsChannel 5 that these calendars are designed around the long term, and what is best for the students and the community as a whole. They add they want to know how this will impact not only families, but businesses as well.

The meetings will take place on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the following four locations:
Shelledy Elementary School cafeteria – 353 N. Mesa, Fruita
Pomona Elementary School cafeteria - 588 25 1/2 Road, Grand Junction
Bookcliff Middle School cafeteria - 540 29 1/4 Road, Grand Junction
Palisade High School library - 3679 G Road, Palisade

Our kid's get so busy with all of their scheduled events. I believe it is a shame to take away their summer break. Kid's need the break and look forward to their full amount of time for summer vacations and spending time with families. Please don't shorten summer breaks.
