Local Advocate Uses Mustang as Childhood Cancer Awareness Tool

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - There are a few things Dorothea Oldaker loves more than her cars.

"I've gotten over the phobia of 'don't touch the car' to 'go ahead kids! You can touch it and get in it," said Oldaker.

One of those passions Oldaker holds close to her heart is fighting against childhood cancer.

When she was approached by Roush Performance to transform her car into a mobile reminder of the Childhood Cancer Research Fund, she didn't hesitate.

"I just want people to know this is what's going on and that there is a voice out there for them," Oldaker said.

Roush decorated the entire car in childhood cancer awareness graphics and for the next year the car will be displayed at hospitals and car shows across the country.

For families like the Lloyd's, they know every effort counts.

"It's the worst feeling a parent could ever imagine feeling, the day you hear that your child has cancer," said Jami Lloyd.

Gracie Lloyd was diagnosed with kidney cancer at three years old.

"My belly hurt and I had a headache," Gracie said.

Now, at seven years old, Gracie has been in remission for the last three years.

"We know that we're lucky right now but there are a lot of kids that are not and we need to fight for them," said Lloyd.

Oldaker hopes by using the car to raise awareness will support the same efforts that helped save Gracie.

"We will take [the car] to Phoenix and I'm thinking of selling it and starting over," said Oldaker, "all proceeds will go to children's cancer."
