Robinson Campaign Holds Main Street Rally

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- A Democratic candidate for House District 55 held a campaign rally on Main Street in Grand Junction Tuesday morning.

Dan Robinson made two policy announcements for his campaign.

Robinson is pushing to have a property exemption tax carry over for senior citizens if they leave a house they have lived in for over 10 years.

The current exemption tax is for senior citizens 65 and older who have lived in the same house for 10 years. These senior citizens would then be eligible for a 50 percent exemption on their property taxes.

However, if a senior citizen had to move, that exemption would then be taken away and the 10 years would start over again.

"If they downsize or the kids leave, they many times can't take care of, don't want to take care of their houses and property. This exemption would allow it to follow them to a new house that's simpler and more suitable to them," said Robinson.

It's one of the first pieces of legislation Robinson says he will push if he is elected.

The Democratic hopeful also said he wants to push senior seminars to be held at Colorado Mesa University. Robinson says these programs at the university would benefit baby boomers' well being, as well as generate revenue for the growing school.
