GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- After 25 years of planning, the Riverfront Trail that will one day connect Grand Junction to Fruita is on its way to completion. Phase 1, which covers three miles, is finished.

The Riverfront Commission will hold a celebratory ribbon cutting Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Blue Heron Boat Ramp. They'll also take a vote to name the new path. "Everybody's really excited that we got almost three miles of new trails to dedicate, and we're just thrilled that we are seeing this progress," said Jessica Peterson, spokesperson for Mesa County.

Officials say the second phase will start in Fruita and head toward Grand Junction, and the third phase will connect the two paths. They say they hope to have all three phases finished by 2014.
