MESA COUNTY, Colo.- After receiving $2.9 million from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) on Wednesday, the Colorado Riverfront Trail project is one step closer to completion.

Those funds will help start phase 3 of the project, which connects phases 1 and 2.

Phase 1 runs about three miles west from the Blue Heron Boat Ramp in Grand Junction, into the Walter Walker Wildlife Sanctuary. Nearly complete, that portion came with a $1.4 million price tag.

Phase 2 starts in July and will run from the Fruita Visitor Center to 18 1/2 Road at a cost of $1.1 million.

Phase 3 is the largest undertaking to date. It's a 5.4-mile section that is estimated to run about $6 million.

Construction for phase III is set for January 2013 and officials hope to be finished by the end of the year.
