Review Hearing for CO State Trooper, Ivan Lawyer

by KREX News Room
by Amanda Brandeis

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- A review hearing took place today for one of two Colorado State Troopers accused in the shooting death of a Mesa County man.
Ivan Lawyer is charged with negligent homicide. A potential pool of jurors was selected today, however, more will be brought in on Monday because of the high-profile nature of the case.
District Attorney, Pete Hautzinger, says the final jury should be decided Monday, and opening statements will begin Tuesday morning.
Lawyer is accused in the death of Jason Kemp, who was shot at his Redlands home. He and another trooper reportedly kicked in Kemp's front door and fired at him, even though Kemp was unarmed.
Issues discussed at the hearing included how much information the defense will be allowed to disclose about the victim's criminal history.
The prosecution is arguing that Kemp's past is irrelevant. They say all the jury needs to know is that prior to the shooting Kemp told troopers they could not come in without a warrant.
