GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Parents are becoming more and more aware of resources to help them with their disabled children.

The Center for Independence, held their second annual training day for parents with disabled children Monday night.

Officials say Grand Junction has a large population of disabled folks, but there's also a lot of resources available, which they're trying to educate the area about.

More than 15 different organizations were at the training session, with around 20 speakers presenting helpful information for parents.

"One in four families is effected with disability. Being disabled is the only minority that anyone from any race, culture, or social economic background can join at any point and time; car accident victims, stroke," said Jana Hill, vocational program manager.

A father of a 14-year-old boy who has epilepsy attended the meeting to find out how to make his son more independent.

"[I came] To get as much education on what I can do to help him before he's an adult, so that he can develop," said Joe Gentile.

About 40 parents showed up Monday night, which was a much larger crowd than last year's event.

They hope to hold the training session next year as well.
