GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- People from across the valley collect at the Veterans Memorial Park to celebrate "Armed Forces Weekend" with a barbecue.
The Veterans Committee of the Western slope and American Legion Family Post 200 hosted this annual event on Sunday.
Officials are hoping celebrations like this one bring additional awareness to the park. They want people to not only gain education on it, but utilize it as well.
“A lot of people don’t know the park is here,” said James Park, of the American Legion. “They don’t realize there is a veteran’s memorial park in Grand Junction. A lot of people just think this is a fair grounds and this portion over here is actually Veteran’s Memorial Park.”
It was the second time the committee hosted this event.
Officials are hoping to do a small amount of construction to the park in the future, such as installing flag poles and lights to draw more attention.
