Residents Get 'Filthy' to Raise Funds For United Way of Mesa County

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Hundreds of people hurtled over obstacles and scaled the highest Matchett Park peaks Saturday morning for the first annual Filthy 5K.

The Filthy 5K, as well as the 1.5 mile run for kids, was held by the Grand Junction Parks and Recreation Department and Einstein Bros. Bagels to raise money for United Way of Mesa County.

Before finishing the race, runners had to get through a massive pit of mud, making it a bit trickier to make it to the finish line.

"It was good but I'm very ... I don't want to do that again," laughed Zoe Peters.

In addition to other funds donated, United Way of Mesa County also received 30 percent of the money raised from the event's registration fee.

Dear Donna, not a problem. If I want to donate to one of the 30 agencies I will make the donation directly so that ALL of my dollars go to the agency in question. Better yet, by donating directly I can verify that my money doesn't go to groups who might not have America's best interests in mind. I could even make a donation to legitimate charities outside of the thirty agencies. Luckily we still live in America and ultimately I decide when to open my wallet and when to keep it closed.

Dear Disgusted, With your opinion, could you please stay clear of the over 30 agencies that United Way serves through it's campaign? Oh, in addition- steer clear of the volunteers who hail from every major employer, and those who donate their hard earned cash to make the community a better place to live. Should be a seemingly easy task to conquer. Let me know how that goes for you. Sincerely, Donna

I don't understand the negative comment regarding United Way- all the money they raise STAYS in the community, it stays local, they don't apply for grants, they help nonprofits do their job better. The government could use something like United Way to help them!

I don't understand...what's so bad about United Way? They bring a ton of money to organizations who help others...and by DONATION, not tax money.

In my opinion it is VERY appropriate that rolling in he muck and the United Way are synonymous.
