Rep. Scott Tipton for Oil Shale

by KREX News Room

Grand Junction - The Western Colorado Congress of Mesa County club opposes Representative Scott Tipton's refusal of water study in the oil shale amendment. Congresswoman of California Grace Napolitano made an amendment to Lamborn Bill, calling for further water research to be executed before commercial oil shale leasing begins.

Congressman Scott Tipton, of Congressional District 3, Mike Coffman, of District 5, and Doug Lamborn, of District 6, all voted against the amendment, leaving local residents worried about natural resources.

The WCC of Mesa County said there isn't enough technology to support oil shale leasing and could leave a negative impact on our natural resources, especially water.

"The truth is we just don't know, so until we know why are we taking commercial oil shale leasing on federal lands, it makes no sense. It's not a good business decision," added Tom Phillips a chemical engineer.

WCC of Mesa County wants to communicate their concern and objection to Tipton, showing how oil shale leasing could be counterproductive if as little as one bottle of fuel is created after using up to nearly 8 gallons of water.

When people start dying in your county, things will heat up. Garfield County has had many deaths related to the natural gas drilling process.

If it takes more water to produce only a quart? half gallon? a gallon? of oil, then I can't see the oil industry being interested in developing oil shale. Why deplete a resource when there isn't enough to produce a profit? I think the environmentalists are up to their scare tactics again.
