Recent Rain Becoming Problematic for Burn Areas

LARIMER COUNTY, Colo.- The recent wet conditions are being welcomed in many parts of Colorado. However, it is also causing problems for some communities already impacted by this year's wildfires.

Near the High Park Fire burn area, crews had to close a stretch of Colorado Highway 14 after a stream jumped its banks and spilled black soot and debris on the highway.

Further south, an area burned by the Waldo Canyon Fire near Colorado Springs received rain, but no flooding has been reported.

Officials say charred hillsides are vulnerable to erosion and flooding during downpours because they have less vegetation to soak up rain and burned soils can repel water.
