Quarles no Longer Palisade's Police Chief

by KREX News Room

PALISADE, Colo.- A longtime Grand Valley police chief is no longer serving in that position. NewsChannel 5 has confirmed that Carroll Quarles' tenure as Palisade's top cop has come to an end.

Town treasurer Joe Vlach says Quarles' final day on the job was Oct. 24.

Officials are not revealing the circumstances behind his departure, saying it's a personnel matter.

Carroll Quarles had served as Palisade's police chief for the past 17 years.

Officials say Rich Sales, the town administrator, is serving as the interim chief for the remainder of the week.

Vlach says after that, the interim position will be held by Grand Junction Police Cmdr. Mike Nordine.

"We are going to look at internal candidates as well as external candidates, so that's going to take some time to search for someone," said Vlach. "We don't foresee a consultant being brought on right now. We're hoping that Mike Nordine is going to step in and get a good handle on the situation; we need to get him up to speed first."

Town officials say they want to thank Carroll Quarles for his many years of service, and they wish him well.

Well, considering there was a home break-in a while back, where among the items stolen by felon on parole was a loaded handgun. It only took three days for the first investigator to arrive; a week (and a call to a parole officer) before he was picked up even though he had been witnessed branishing the firearm and there was a know address for him. Can anyone elese hear the Keystone Cops theme??

What didn't he do and how was he a poor leader?

He stayed a long time for a chief who didn't do much, he was a poor leader. It has always been funny that he thought he 'cleaned up Palisade'. Good riddance.

This sounds like a funny way to do this ???? Not sure we are getting the whole story. Need to be able to hear all sides. Not just info for a headline story.

If the trustees / council didn't even know about this as well as the reasons for it there is something very fishy behind Mr Sales actions here. Funny how this all happened when he announces his retirement intentions (maybe age discrimination lawsuit here). Funny how they keep firing "directors" every 6 months as well. Maybe its Sales who should be looked into. Quarles always told it like it was and the town folk don't like that, no sir.

I had a conversation with him a few weeks back. Nice guy. Seemed to have his head on straight. Hope all is well.
