DENVER - Local law enforcement wants to put the freeze on auto theft with "Puffer Week," which runs Jan 28 - Feb 1.

Western Colorado Auto Theft Task Force and Coloradans Against Auto Theft are teaming up this week for a statewide awareness effort to put the breaks on "puffers," which is a term coined by car thieves to describe a vehicle left running unattended.

Leaving a vehicle running unattended is illegal in the state of Colorado. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 50 percent of cars stolen have the keys in them.

The agencies' goal is to educate the public about the law and prevent auto thefts.

House Bill 11-1275, the Colorado Idling Law, applies to Commercial Diesel Vehicles only. Where in the Colorado Revised Statutes is there a idling law for passenger vehicles?
