Pro Cycling Challange May Change Route

LEADVILLE, Colo.- A deep hole in a highway north of Leadville may force changes to the route for the USA Pro Challenge bicycle race.

State highway workers are still trying to figure out how to repair a 20-foot-wide, 100-foot-deep hole that prompted the closure of U.S. 24.

The Colorado Department of Transportation says the hole opened Monday after soil gave way above an abandoned railroad tunnel.

The current route takes racers over the mountain highway pass
next month.

According to the Vail Daily, race officials are hoping workers can provide a temporary fix to allow racers to avoid a detour.

The inaugural race last year attracted more than one million spectators, making it one of the largest cycling events in U.S. history.

Organizers hope to nearly double the attendance this year.
