Powerball Hits Record High, Sales Spike

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- If you're feeling lucky, you may want to stop by a gas station on your way to work. The Powerball has hit an all-time record high, and the lucky numbers will be revealed Wednesday night.

Last weekend's drawing was an estimated $325 million before the numbers were picked, which was the fourth largest jackpot in the game's history.

However, with no one winning, Wednesday’s Powerball has increased to a total of $550 million dollars.

Since sales pick up during high-jackpot periods, officials say this new drawing is spiking.

“As soon as they announced there was no winner, we have had walk-ins like crazy,” said Sharol Brown, owner of the Orchard Mesa Market. “Everyone is excited that comes in because they all want to win the Powerball, and we are hoping that one of them wins.”

Colorado Lottery officials say they've seen a 72 percent increase in sales since Sunday.

More than 1.5 million Coloradans are feeling lucky and have purchased tickets.

“I would give it to the church and buy them new buildings,” said Victor Vonilla, a Powerball participant.

“Right now, in this day and age, so many people need help because they lost their homes and houses and things,” said Sherry Palmer, a Powerball participant.

Palmer says if she wins, she would lend a financial hand to those in need.

“This would just mean everything,” said Palmer, “from the bottom of my heart.”

For those who haven't yet purchased their tickets, some local stores have a plan.

“We are going to set up a third register from 2-7 p.m. and make sure everyone can get their Powerball quick in and out and maybe get a winner,” said Brown.

The Powerball numbers will be announced Wednesday at 9 p.m. Mountain time.
