MESA COUNTY, Colo.- The National Ski Patrol for Powderhorn Ski Resort was on the hunt Sunday looking for strong and confident ski patrol men and women to join their team at their annual tryout.

Some of the duties of ski patrol men and women include; making sure each and every day the run is prune, that there are no rocks on the slopes and everything is marked. "Every morning we check every run, and you touch everything on your morning run," said Rondo Buecheler, ski patrol director.

"The better the skier, the easier it is," said Patrick Trimm, patrol rep. of the National Ski Patrol.

Tryouts are held every year for skiers and snowboarders, age 15 and up, to try and become apart of the prestigious ski patrol team.

"They've got to be able to ski every run up here including some of our runs that have lots of obstacles in them," said Buecheler.

The patrolmen say they'll know after three runs if the potential rookies have made the cut.

"We will do long radius turns, medium radius turns, shot radius turns.
We are going to do some crude skiing and some bump skiing. That will pretty much let us know if they are capable of doing it," said Trimm.

Those who patrol say there's no better feeling than being up on the mountains of Powderhorn, and getting to help those in need.

"I enjoy helping people and getting them off the mountain safe and making sure everybody is having a great time," said Trimm.

Officials say they are looking for more volunteer ski patrol men and women and will leave some spots open for this upcoming weekend if anyone is interested.
