Police to Crackdown on DUIs During Super Bowl

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- For some, the Super Bowl is the unofficial end to the holiday season or maybe a holiday in itself.

But authorities are warning that they'll be out in full force this weekend, cracking down on those driving under the influence.

“Anytime we have any kind of big day or holiday event, people do consume alcohol, that’s part of the tradition,” said Kate Porras of the Grand Junction Police Department. “It can be part of the fun as long as you are doing is responsibly.”

They recommend having your designated driver already picked out before the big game.

With local cab companies planning on having their whole fleet out, there are plenty of options to stay safe.

“We are out here trying to serve the public,” said Ryan Kohlman, of K2 Taxi. “We don’t want people to have to pay thousands of dollars, or go to jail, or lose their license. So if they need a ride, just call 242-GOK2 anytime.”

Last year, the Mesa County Sheriffs office made one DUI arrest on Super Bowl Sunday, with the Grand Junction Police Department making six.

The Super Bowl will broadcast this Sunday on NewsChannel 5.

Wouldn't it more practical to conduct a crackdown after the Super Bowl?
