GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Mesa County workers have completed the first phase of the Safety and Mobility Project along U.S. Highway 50.
A traffic signal has been installed at the intersection of U.S. Highway 50 and 27 3/4 Road near the entrance of the Orchard Mesa City Market, and will be active on Thursday.
These lights will not go through a time period of flashing lights which alerts drivers of the new signal.
Pedestrians will also see an improvement with the installation of islands with push buttons and a 10 foot walkway on the southern end of the old frontage road.
The total cost of Phase I is approximately $700,000.
Plans for this project have been in development for nearly two years, and construction began 18 months ago.
Phase II of the project will include the opening of the forth leg at the Fairgrounds entrance and will take place in 2016 as part of the Fairgrounds Master Plan.
