Pediatric Practice Honored For Promoting Childhood Literacy

by KREX News Room

Grand Junction - A local pediatric practice gets an A+ for its efforts to promote early childhood literacy. Western Colorado Pediatrics will receive the most prestigious award handed out by the non-profit organization Reach Out and Read. Reach Out and Read aims to improve children's reading skills by providing them with books starting at six months of age.

Western Colorado Pediatrics is being recognized for its innovative methods such as hiring a volunteer who reads to children in the waiting room. Research has shown there are many advantages of getting kids to read early on.

"It's important to promote literacy because children do better if they can read books and if they like books and if they know words, they just do better in school," Cathie Clark, with the Reach Out and Read program, said.

Western Colorado Pediatrics will receive a special gift of 1,000 books.
A representative will travel to Washington, DC, to formally accept the award.
