ASPEN, Colo. (AP) - Elected officials have voted to proceed with building a pedestrian underpass from the Aspen Airport Business Center to the airport, even though the $5.4 million price is about $2 million more than original estimates.

The underpass was proposed to create a safer pedestrian crossing of busy Colorado Highway 82 at the business center.

The Elected Officials Transportation Committee voted Thursday to dip into its capital fund to cover about $1 million of the extra cost. Pitkin County's capital reserve fund also will contribute $1 million toward the higher costs. The transportation committee is made of elected representatives from the town of Snowmass Village, the city of Aspen and Pitkin County.
