GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Students at Pear Park Elementary piled into their gymnasium Monday morning for a very special announcement.

The elementary school was awarded the National Blue Ribbon in Excellence, which is the highest achievement a school can accomplish.

The U.S. Department of Education honors schools for achieving high success on this year’s standardized math and reading tests.

Schools could also receive the award if they improve student performance on state tests over a five-year period, and have at least 40 percent of students in the free or reduced lunch program. That is the case for Pear Park Elementary.

“It's something they can be extremely proud of,” said Cheri Taylor, principal at Pear Park Elementary. “No matter where they go they know that they came from a school of excellence in the nation and so that means a lot to them.”

In all, 269 schools were recognized across the country.

Among the four other Colorado schools to win the award was Garnet Mesa Elementary School in Delta.

The school was awarded for its improved performance as well.
