Partners Wait List Tops 100 Kids Waiting for Mentors

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - January was recently proclaimed as "Mentoring Month" in Mesa County and one local mentoring group is hoping the increased awareness helps them find volunteers.

Officials with Partners say more kids sign up for Partners than mentors.

They say they try to keep their waiting list as low as possible, but recently that list has reached 108 kids.

That's a number the agency hasn't reached in the last three years.

Officials are hoping more people in the community will volunteer their time to help that cause.

"When we talk to [the kids] before they have a mentor and after, there's just a big difference in their life with school, how they interact with their parents, peer and their community, it changes their lives," Maggie Moorland of Mesa County Partners.

Mentors need to commit three hours a week for a year to their "partner."

Officials hold an informational open house at the Partners building every first Tuesday of the month.
