Parking Violation Fees Go Up

by KREX News Room

(Grand Junction) Parking violations will soon cost you more after the Grand Junction City Council approves a hike in rates and fees. The city plans to raise parking infraction fees from $10 to $15 starting next year.

Officials say the move puts Grand Junction's fees closer to communities around Colorado. It will help pay for things like meter maintenance and enforcement.

Grand Junction Financial Operations Manager Jodi Romero explained, "A couple years ago, though, we did start with a debt service payment for the construction of the garage itself. So, we've got to service that debt with the revenues that are coming in as well. But, what happens is we look at our fines every so often, every few years."

The charge for illegally parking in a handicapped spot it also going up, but city officials say there are no increases to the price of parking at a meter.
