PETA Reacts to Proposed Grand Junction Pigeon Amendment

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- PETA has sent a letter to Grand Junction City Council asking them not to move forward on a proposed zoning amendment that will allow racing pigeons in the city.

The city is looking into changing the zoning codes to allow racing pigeons in Grand Junction.

PETA, which stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, says they sent a letter to the Grand Junction City Council claiming that during a 15-month undercover investigation of pigeon racing in other states, they discovered training techniques that they feel are abusive.

In the letter they outline many controversial practices, saying, "Forcing pigeons to fly in Colorado races violates the plain language of the cruelty to animals law, as the breeders, owners and trainers who enter pigeons in the races overdrive the birds, deprive them of sustenance and shelter and later routinely kill the least successful birds."

NewsChannel 5 reached out to city officials for comment on PETA's letter but according to city rules, council members cannot comment on an amendment set for public hearing until its scheduled date, which is Sept.19.
