Organizers Discuss Telecommunication Coverage in Rural Areas

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Officials say rural communities are missing out on telecommunication services, and many experts gathered Thursday to discuss ways to improve broadband access locally.

Telecommunication officials met at the Ute Water Conservancy District office to discuss a more comprehensive plan to deliver broadband across all Colorado communities.

Officials say broadband technologies are becoming more essential in the delivery of health care and education.

Plus, officials say advanced telecommunication services are important to businesses, both small and large, and for attracting new businesses.

"Access to high-speed Internet, we're talking about the ability to download video; we're talking about the ability for businesses to share massive amounts of data with other entities across the United States," said Bonnie Petersen, executive director of Club 20.

Officials say many entities are working individually rather than collectively in the delivery of telecommunications services, which is leaving many communities without needed service; it's also creating duplicate or even triplicate service to a select few.
