GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Orchard Mesa Middle School students learned more about 9/11 on Wednesday, during a special patriotic assembly.
Dozens of students collected outside their middle school, to pay respect to the victims and heroes of 9/11. Officials say ever since the attacks happened 12 years ago, they've been holding this patriotic ceremony.
Though it has evolved over the years, they continue to invite those who have served in the military, and both police and firefighters.
“It’s important for them to have an understanding of what our country has been through and to honor the people that serve our country and to always remember that our freedom is very important to us,” said Sheri Vana, assistant principal of Orchard Mesa Middle School. “And in order to keep that, we need to honor the people that protect us.”
Officials say they try to teach about the day throughout the whole school year, since these students were either only toddlers or just born when the attacks occurred.
