Open House for Diverging Diamond Interchange, 22 Rd. Proposals

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - An open house was held Tuesday evening to introduce the public to Grand Junction's newest construction project, a diverging diamond interchange.

This $4 million project is a partnership between the city and the Colorado Department of Transportation to better improve traffic flow into 2035.

It will be implemented at the crossing of Highway 6 & 50 and I-70. Officials say this type of interchange is more sustainable and less expensive than other interchange styles.

"It's a little unconventional with what you do with traffic. You cross traffic over, so traffic is actually on your right-hand side instead of your typical left-hand side," explained Jason Smith, a resident engineer with C-DOT.

C-DOT officials say shifting drivers to the left side of the road eliminates the danger and traffic build-up of the left-hand turn. It will be among the first of it's kind in Colo.

Along with the interchange, city officials presented a plan to move 22 road (at Highway 6) 500 feet west. The goal of this is to lengthen spacing with the interchange and create more efficient traffic flow off the interstate.

More than 100 residents attended the open house and were able to submit comment on both projects, which are slated for construction between March and Nov. of this year.

Moving the road 6500' almost 1-1/4 miles takes it past 21 road, that ought to do it!
