CAMEO, Colo. - Colorado Parks and Wildlife is teaming up with Palisade administrators to try to turn thousands of acres in Cameo into a large shooting complex.
Palisade officials say that the old Xcel power plant in Cameo is being disassembled and Parks and Wildlife is looking to purchase that land and turn it into a complex that would have several different shot gun, pistol, rifle and archery ranges.
Officials say they hope recreationist, tourists and people looking to compete in sports shooting will use the complex and boost the local economy.
"Our local businesses, our restaurants and our hotels see some lag periods. We think this facility, being a year round facility, would be able to help fill some of those slow spots and would be great for the economic benefit of all of our businesses," said Richard Sales with Palisade town administration.
Currently, officials are gathering letters of support to present to Xcel in hopes of purchasing the land.
The entire complex is estimated to cost $8-10 million.
