New Pope Picks Name

VATICAN CITY (AP) - Catholics have a new pope. Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio the archbishop of Buenos Aires, has taken the name of Pope Francis, after St. Francis of Assisi.

The 76-year-old is the first pope from Latin America.

In a statement, President Barack Obama describes the new pontiff as ``a champion of the poor and the most vulnerable among us'' who ``carries forth the message of love and compassion.''
