New Montessori Preschool Opening in Fruita

FRUITA, Colo. - Melanie Harmon decided to open the Montessori Preschool in Fruita after she realized how limited the preschool options were for her own son.
Harmon and her husband, both with extensive teaching experience, changed a 100 year old home on Plum Street into the newest school in Fruita.
The Montessori preschool will do things a little differently than a traditional preschool.
"Montessori is an educationally based program that is based on the development of a child, the developmental stages of a child, the child's interests and needs," said Harmon.
Once children are taught what materials to use, and how to use them, it's up to the kids to decide how they learn the best.
"It's about the process, we don't give them color sheets that have a picture and say 'Okay, color the flower,' it's 'Create something using the materials we provide,'" said Harmon.
Right now she is looking for a small enrollment in August, but she's hoping to expand the school as the years go on.
"Every kid learns differently, every kid has different needs and having choices is the key to that," she said.
If you are interested in learning more about the Montessori Preschool there will be two informational meetings taking place at the school at 140 N. Plum Street, on July 2 and 11 at 6:30 p.m.
