FRUITA, Colo.- A man's body was discovered in an irrigation ditch in Fruita Wednesday. It happened around 3:30 p.m. in the 1200 block of 17 1/2 Road.
"I stopped where I usually stop my truck, go get the mail and close the head gate and I didn't notice him right at first," said Donna Berman, the resident who discovered the body floating in her irrigation ditch.
"I happen to glance up and just see what looked odd, odd color, shape and it turned out to be a man's hip sticking out of the water," Berman said.
Berman checked to see if the man was still alive and when she realized he wasn't, she called authorities.
"The subject is a white male, appears to be cleaned up and no real identifying marks. He's in his early 20s," said Lt. Jim Fogg of the Mesa County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities say they believe the body may have been floating upstream from where it was actually found.
"Anyone who spends time on the rivers, they will know it's easy to fall and hit your head and drown," said Berman.
The man's identity is unknown and there are currently no clues as to the cause or manner of his death.
Authorities are now looking to see if any missing person cases match the description of the man found.
"Somebody's missing out there, somebody's missing a son, a brother. I hope they figure that out ... a little emotional obviously," said Berman.
The man has brown hair and was wearing jeans and running shoes when he was found.
