GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. This weekend the National Rifle Association (NRA) and Cabela's partnered up to educate folks on gun safety and awareness. The NRA also registered new members to the organization, which overall has spiked in recent months.

The Second Amendment says we have the right to bear arms, but with that right comes responsibility.

NRA certified instructor Suzanne Masterson, said, "It's a tool of last resort, but it's a wonderful sense of confidence to have that ability and competence to know how to use it safely."

Lauren Truitt, retail marketing manager for Cabela's, said, "Really focus on personal defense, home defense and understanding Colorado state laws and statutes."

Guy and Suzanne Masterson are certified NRA instructors, dedicated to making sure people know their rights.

Guy said, "We see Americans. We see people from across the range that believe in their rights to be more safe."

"Privilege for me to be able to instruct and help others learn how to shoot, learn the basics of safe firearms ownership and right use of their rights," said Suzanne.

"Unfortunately there are people out there that will take advantage of you. In ways that your loved ones, you and your children may regret for the rest of your lives," said Guy.

The goal of education classes is to teach people valuable life skills, "Quite a big difference to get the instruction in the right way, in a way that raises the necessity for respect. Respecting others and respecting the power of the firearm itself," said Suzanne.

In the past few months NRA membership has increased.

NRA membership recruiter Patty Cattoor, said, "Last I heard it was about 8,000 members a day."

"At anytime people feel there's a threat to the structure of our law system we have, there's always greater interest, and we've seen that recently," said Guy.

"I've had young people, it's awesome to see the young people. They're just saying they want to be a part of fighting for our Second Amendment rights," Cattoor.

By partnering up, Cabela's and the NRA hope to inform more people on their right to bear arms and how to do it safely.

The Mastersons hold a free class to the community once a month called Refuse to be a Victim. It outlines a 10-point plan on being safer against criminal activity.
