Murdoch’s to Sell 9,000 Chicks this Spring Season

CLIFTON, Colo.- As we head closer to spring, a new kind of pet seems to be becoming more popular and it's not your kind of conventional animal.

Chicks of all sorts are being sold at the Murdoch’s in Clifton, symbolizing that spring is right around the corner.

"All the barrels are full," said Lillie Kopasz, employee at Murdoch’s. “You bring a child in here and they know its chick season, and from the time they are 2 years old, they want to look at baby chicks, or ducks, or geese.”

For Kopasz, these two aisles are her Disney Land.

Over last 10 years she has been selling all kinds of birds, but don't ask this chicken enthusiast how many she's sold.

“Oh, I couldn't tell you, but I can tell you I have 4 babies at home right now that I bought last night,” said Kopasz.

However, she’s not the only one snatching up these feathered friends.

Tammy Lowell is buying chicks yet again for her grandkids, so she can them about responsibilities.

“A couple of years ago, we bought chicks in here and raised them,” said Lowell. “I wanted them to have the experience of raising baby chicks.”

A responsibility they may be, but with the right stuff you're sure to be ok.

“You need a heat lamp, which is probably the most important thing,” said Todd Long, manager at Murdoch’s. “They do need 90 degree temperatures when they are first born and of course the right feed and fresh water every day.”

But how many birds go flying out the doors? Enough to keep Kopasz busy this spring season.

“Well between the first week of March until the middle of May, we sell about 9,000,” said Kopasz.

The average bird will cost you about $3.

Within city limits, it's legal to have these kinds of birds. However, officials say roosters are a different story with more complicated legalities.

In MOST Subdivisions within the City Limits of Grand Junction these are illegal. Even though the City allows them most Subdivision Covenants do not allow Farm Animals. If you live in a subdivision built in the last 30 years it is unlikely that you can have these animals (not pets). You could be fined, so be aware!
