DENVER-The federal government has approved two more leases for companies to research how to economically extract oil from oil shale resources in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming.

The Bureau of Land Management approved oil shale research, development and demonstration leases for ExxonMobil Exploration and Natural Soda Holdings.

The decision is subject to a 30-day appeal period.

The leases were approved with measures to protect sensitive resources including water.

The leases are part of a second round awarded for oil shale research. A half-dozen leases were also awarded in 2007.
