MESA COUNTY, Colo.- More seniors throughout the valley can now apply to get a free food box every month, due to the USDA offering extra food cases.

A Mesa County Health Department program serves around 1,450 seniors, but the new expanded case load will allow them to feed 40 more.

Officials say there is no current waiting list, but the program has been getting full.

"We have a lot of needy seniors that are just barley getting by. That's who I deal with, and that's who I see. Sometimes it just breaks my heart," said Michael Heidel, program manager.

Residents must be 60 years or older and make a gross monthly income of $1,211.

For two people living in the same household, it's $1,640.

For each additional family member, add $429.

Call 970-241-3651 to find out more about eligibility.

Residents can also get two months of food in one stop to save on gas money.
