Montrose Man Accused of Selling Fake Meteorites

by Danielle Kreutter

Montrose - A Montrose man in in hot water with authorities for allegedly selling fake meteorites and making thousands of dollars. 58-year-old Steve Curry was cited and released Saturday for theft over $500, criminal simulation, and fraud in effecting sales. NewsChannel 5 spoke with one of the owners of a Grand Junction shop that sold the supposed fake meteorites and he says he was very surprised to hear about the fraud.

Main Street Minerals and Beads has worked with Steve Curry for at least six months. Co-owner Kevin Mahoney says he was under the impression the meteorites were as legitimate as the rest sold in their store.

"To us they feel like meteorites, and we think they're meteorites. To be this guy isn't any different than any of the other vendors that we deal with," said Mahoney.

The meteorites in question were pulled from shelves immediately after the authorities alerted Main Street Mineral and Beads' employees.

"We've kept them off our shelves since. We want to wait and see if this guy is innocent or guilty before we put them back on our shelves," Mahoney said.

Officials aren't releasing much information about the investigation or charges at this time because they say it is still very early in the process.

Steve Curry tells NewsChannel 5 that he plans on fighting these charges and is meeting with the Grand Junction District Attorney Monday morning.

During the Clinton administration they said they had meteorites that were from Mars, I thought that was interesting, they couldn't prove that either.

If heavy bombardments of meteorites from outerspace brought all the gold, iron and rare earth elements to earth, as scientists tell us, then he has meteorites! Google it.

Fake meteorites that Steve Curry has sold for thousands of dollars. If fraud doesn't warrant investigation, mystery commenter, then what does?

really?! fake rocks? Dumb and dumber. There must be a severe shortage of crimes to investigate. Gee the streets are much safer with fake rock peddlers cleared from the city limits.
