Montrose Holds Public Hearing on Proposed 2013 Budget

MONTROSE, Colo.- The Montrose City Council held its first of two public hearings concerning the 2013 budget on Tuesday night.

City officials plan to adopt a finalized budget by the middle of October.

Currently, the projected budget for the city of Montrose is $35,375,240, a 16 percent decrease from the 2012 budget.

Although they anticipate cutting several full-time employees from the city, officials say the budget is not reflective of poor economic times.

Officials say the majority of the decreased budget actually comes from major capital projects that were budgeted for in the past but have since been completed.

"Mainly because the projects are done, so we don't budget for them for the next year," said Shani Wittenberg, Montrose finance director. "The main one is the West Main Arterial and it was budgeted, I think, at $2 million in 2012, so of the $5 million we've decreased, that's two of them."

Some of the capital projects that are planned for 2013 include the completion of the South Townsend sidewalk construction for $360,000, infrastructure improvements around the city for $1,161,339, city facility upgrades for $80,000 and completion of the construction of Montrose's new three million gallon water tank for $150,000.

There will be one additional public hearing on Oct. 16 before the city council adopts the budget.
