MONTROSE, Colo.- Montrose city officials are teaming up with the Public Art Experience (PAX) to put together Montrose’s Celebration of Art and Culture which they say will increase art awareness and help boost the local economy.

It’s almost impossible to walk a block of downtown Montrose without passing a few works of art.

“Montrose is a very diverse community and we have so many artists here and we want to give them an outlet,” said Jean Sobieck, PAX Board Member and event organizer.

Sobieck is working with city officials and community members to plan one of PAX’s biggest fundraisers.

“What we’re trying to do is bring together the visual, culinary and performing arts for an elegant evening in downtown Montrose,” said Sobieck.

Along with scoping out the downtown galleries, PAX will also be unveiling eight new sculptures that will be displayed around town.

“We will be trading out our sculptures that we had all year on loan, for new ones and they’ll be on display for a year,” said Sobieck.

More than 19 businesses are taking part in Montrose’s Celebration of Art and Culture and each business will be filled with carious vendors offering food, drinks and different artistic performances.

“I think it’s great to get people in our community aware of other artists that are right here locally,” said Yesenia Duncan, co-owner of A+Y Design Gallery.

Duncan has seen a positive affect in participating in events like this one.

“There’s an event that brings [people] down here. They’re walking by, they see something going on inside the store so they walk in and it creates this new exposure and brings new clientele into our store,” said Duncan.

“Everyone is participating in their own way to not just elevate the arts, but to help their own business out,” said Sobieck.

The celebration will take place Friday, Sept. 7 in downtown Montrose from 5-9 p.m.

The artist recognition and People's Choice Award will be presented at 6:30 p.m.

Advanced tickets cost $10 and purchasing a ticket the same day as the event will cost $15.

Many local downtown businesses will be selling tickets or you can call 970-249-5000 or visit www.CityofMontrose.org/art for more information.
