Man Hopes to Use Model Planes to Inspire Kids

COLLBRAN, Colo. - One Western Slope man is hoping to turn his hobby into a way to inspire kids who may be interested in engineering.

Terry Moore has spent the last 36 years building and flying remote control airplanes.

"I could probably do this about eight hours a day and love it," Moore said.

Moore was an aircraft load master in the Air Force when his love for planes turned into a new hobby.

"It's addictive," Moore said of collecting and building his own air crafts.

He's recently been invited to feature one of his planes, the "Honker", in the Grand Junction Modeller's airshow for the first time.

More than 90 of their club members are expected to attend the airshow and it's also open to the public.

"I literally have butterflies in my stomach," said Moore.

He's taking this chance to use his talents to encourage others to pick up this growing sport.

"There are kids out there that, until they experience something, they don't know what it takes," said Moore.

Moore says, becoming a mentor would be the best way to put his years of experience to work.

"Seeing what a mentor can do for kids is so important, I know if I had a mentor when I was growing up to show me a better way, I would have probably been a pilot in the Air Force," said Moore.

The airshow will be held January 1 at 10:30 a.m. at the east end of the Orchard Mesa drag strip.

There will be model helicopters and planes doing stunts for the crowd at this free event.

Way to go Terry. Sounds like a lot of fun.
