Mesa Residents Heartbroken Over Toddler's Death

MESA, Colo.-Residents and community members in and around the town of Mesa are grief stricken.

Around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday authorities responded to a 911 call about two children being critically ill on Powderhorn Road just off of Highway 65.

When authorities arrived, a 2-year-old boy was dead and his 4-year-old brother was critically ill.

The older boy was airlifted to St. Mary's Hospital and transported to Children's Hospital in Denver overnight.

Residents of the small town are extremely saddened over the toddler's death.

"There's a lot of sorrow, and that was very tragic. In this kind of community, our kids are our everything, and you don't hear about a lot of deaths for children. It really hits hard," said Collbran resident Sascha Chesnut.

Residents tell NewsChannel 5 they are upset there is so much unknown about the incident.

Some people even brushed back tears when approached about the subject.

"I just feel sorry for the family who lost the child. I hope the other one gets better quick," said Mesa resident John Pettus.

Chesnut says their community will come together and heal after this period of sorrow passes.
