MESA COUNTY, Colo.- Mesa and Garfield counties elevated their fire restrictions to Stage 2 Thursday.

Although previous restrictions were in place, sheriff's officials say with drought conditions increasing and temperatures remaining high, a new stage of the fire ban will better protect
the community.

Under Stage 2 restrictions, building, maintaining, attending, or using any type of fire, campfire, charcoal grill, coal, wood-burning stove or sheepherder's stove is prohibited in developed camping and picnic grounds.

The only exceptions are gas grills, stoves or lanterns that include shut-off valves.

Smoking outside is prohibited, unless inside a vehicle or trailer.

Welding or using a torch with an open flame is not allowed, unless in a building properly made for welding.

In addition, operating or using any internal combustion engine, such as a chainsaw, generator or ATV, without a spark arrestor, is prohibited.

Also, using motor vehicles off established roads, motorized trails or established parking areas is prohibited, unless they have working spark arrestors or if there is no vegetation within 10 feet of the vehicle.
