Mesa County Fairgrounds to Remodel

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Officials with the Mesa County Fairgrounds are searching for a new, updated look for the facility, one that can hold more people and larger events.

Officials are seeking input from the public to make sure all concerns are covered regarding the future construction project.

"To allow for bigger events to come in that are multi-day and that bring people in from the region," said Jessica Peterson, spokesperson for Mesa County.

Officials say some of the improvements on the list include constructing an additional entrance, reconfiguring parks, relocating the BMX center, improving the little league center and adding new stables with up to 100 stalls each.

"Looks pretty good, looks like they've covered most their bases," said Kurtis Pauli, who owns property adjacent to the stables.

The project is estimated to cost $13.8 million.

"There is some relatively significant funding for improvements at the fairgrounds," said Peterson.

Before any construction starts, it must be approved by the county commissioners following a public hearing.

"So we're hoping people will give us some feedback on what they think about some of the drafts that are in the plan at this point," said Peterson.

The public seems to be actively commenting on changes they'd like to see made with the 90-acre property.

"We're getting a little bit more information on the event center, so we can hopefully find a home for the Grand Junction Roller Girls during the cold months, because we can't skate outdoors when it's this cold," said Amber Deboer with the Grand Junction Roller Girls.

Officials say the master plan will come out in December. It will then be furthered discussed between residents and county commissioners before any construction begins.

"Right now it's a long-term goal of theirs, so hopefully we can get some more people out here pushing their interest for it," said Deboer.

The next public hearing will be sometime in December.
